Martin Wächter (born November 15, 1960 in Menden (Sauerland) ) is a German municipal official ( CDU ) and full-time mayor of the city of Menden (Sauerland) in the Märkisches Kreis .

After attending school, Wächter trained as an industrial clerk . He completed his studies with a degree in business administration . From 1979 to 1993 Wächter, interrupted from military service and studies, was employed at the Böckelmann company and then at Ewald Rostek Oberflächentechnik GmbH, most recently as commercial manager.

Wächter had been the honorary deputy mayor since 1999 , sat on the council for the CDU since 1994 and was parliamentary group manager from 1999 to 2009 and then parliamentary group chairman until 2015.

He won the mayoral election in the runoff election on September 27, 2015 with 54.43% of the votes cast.

Martin Wächter is not married and lives in the Menden district of Oesbern .

Martin Wächter will not stand for re-election in 2020. The term of office ends on October 30, 2020.

Outstanding points of his tenure were a new industrial area "Hämmer II" in Bösperde, deficiency the inadequate situation in the development of the inner city - failed shopping center / real estate project "Dieler".

Wächter's leadership style has been repeatedly criticized - lack of visibility. With Sebastian Arlt, the CDU has expressly nominated a leader as the new mayor.

In the question of the community center - demolition or renovation - it became apparent that Wächter had no support from his own CDU party, at least on this issue. The CDU and SPD, in turn, were forced to retain the community center by referendum.
