The first mention of the place Oesbern dates from the year 1203.
The municipality of Oesbern, Amt Menden , Kreis Iserlohn existed until 1975 . In 1961 this municipality had an area of 10.84 square kilometers and 699 inhabitants.
The coat of arms of the former municipality of Oesbern shows two black wolf fishing rods on a silver background above the “ Kuheisen ” of the Menden office , which symbolize both the exposed location in the middle of the forest and the Wolfskuhle district . The blazon of the coat of arms reads: “Divided by silver and red; above two black wolf rods placed obliquely to the left, below a silver barrel iron. ”The coat of arms was awarded on April 15, 1937.
The municipality of Oesbern entered into a partnership with the French municipality of Locon . In 1964 the certificates were exchanged. The former municipality of Oesbern was the first of the former Menden office to establish official contact with a partnership municipality.

The Schützenhalle Oesbern is regularly run by the Schützenbruderschaft St. Michael Oesbern e. V. 1904 and used by other organizers.
Sports
The sports club Oesbern e. V. uses the Am Habicht sports field in Lendringsen . The 1st women's soccer team of SV Oesbern has been playing in the women's regional league, group 2, since the 2009/2010 season. The 1st men's team was promoted to the district league A Iserlohn in 2006/07.
