coat of arms

Municipal coat of arms of the former municipality of Schwitten

The coat of arms of the former municipality of Schwitten was awarded on April 15, 1937. The heraldic description of the coat of arms is as follows: "Divided by silver and red, above three red tips growing out of the division, above three red roses placed in bars with silver sepals and lugs, below an overturned silver barrel iron." The tips and roses are taken from a coat of arms , which is attributed to the Cosack family at the Oberstade an der Ruhr farm. The barrel iron and the silver-red colors come from the Menden coat of arms.

partnership

A partnership with the French Lestrem has existed since 1968 . A street in the west of Schwitten was dedicated to the partner community as "Lestremer Straße". In October 2008 the town twinning celebrated its 40th anniversary.

Attractions

Half-timbered houses

cenotaph

The war memorial ("Ehrenmal") located behind the church commemorates those who fell from the First and Second World War with plaques . It was originally located in the junction between Friedrichstrasse and the B 7 and had to give way there for traffic reasons.

Listed farmhouses

In addition to this monument in the narrow sense of the word, there are some listed farmhouses in Schwitten, some of which are somewhat hidden, some of which are obviously facing the viewer. Most of them have been lovingly restored and are in good condition. The size of the courtyards varies, but in the center there are four courtyards with 15 or more compartments . The building type of the “ Low German hall house ” prevails , ie a farmhouse with a large Deelentor and a long hallway.

Other interesting buildings

In addition to the actually listed farmhouses, some other farms should be mentioned: The Rügge farm is an old farm that has been renovated for residential purposes and a law firm. After a fire in 1994, the Düser farm was converted into residential use. The Hofstelle Wulf is a completely renovated half-timbered house with an old Kötterstelle. There is an inscription "Anno 1788" on the door beam. On the Ostermann farm with numerous old oaks, ash trees and poplars there is a renovated bakery, and in the meadow by the farm you can see some artistic attributes. Hof Friedrich, with two beautiful old linden trees on Friedrichstrasse, is an old half-timbered house from 1841, was renovated in 2000. The old mill, now renovated for residential purposes, is also located on Friedrichstrasse.

Church and chapels

Schwitten's citizens are predominantly Catholic. The only church in the district is “St. Apollonia and the Visitation of the Virgin Mary ”. Next to the church is the parsonage (vicariate) and the parsonage, which has several rooms for youth and senior work. The parish hall is used for events and celebrations of associations and clubs and families.

The shops in the center of the village are two hairdressing salons, a bakery branch, a party service and a tutoring school. A bank branch and four car dealers complete the offer. A large department store is located in the Wunne industrial park on the outskirts of Bösperde. Some metal processing companies have settled there and on the B 7. Some farms offer organic items and their own products in farm shops.

Otherwise, the construction, sale and rental of real estate is counted in Schwitten. In the new development area “Hinterm Garten”, between Franz-Lehar-Straße, Wehrschau and Bösperder Weg, on the “Lestremer Straße” named after the French twin town of Schwittens and on the site of the restaurant “Zur Sonne”, which was demolished in 2008, there were and will be many new single or multi-family houses built.

Federal road 7 runs right past the village .
