On the stone is a designated nature reserve (NSG) northeast of Schwitten directly on the Ruhr , with wetlands , forest areas , a pond and an overgrown pond ( still water ). The center of the Ruhr forms the border of the protected area in the north, which is also the boundary between the Märkisches Kreis and the Unna district . To the south, the area is bounded by the edge of the valley, which is overgrown with trees, the area of ​​which rises slightly towards the south.

The NSG is a protection zone established in 1960 by ordinance of the Arnsberg district government , which is now within the city of Menden (Sauerland) . With an area of ​​around 31 hectares, the area is the oldest NSG within today's city limits. The approximately 5.0 hectare duck pond located in the Ruhraue is of central importance. It was created in 1923 during the construction of the hydropower plant in the course of soil dredging or Ruhr impoundment and is now used as fishing water . The duck pond is located south of the Ruhr and is separated from the river by a narrow tongue of land , overgrown with dense riparian wood of alders and willows. The dense bank zones of the pond are overgrown with extensive reeds , which merge into willow bushes and an alder forest or mixed alder forest traversed by rivulets . The dense underwater vegetation consists of the so-called waterweed .

In the southeast there is a large area of ​​pasture parcel (mowing meadow), shaped by water swaths towards the Ruhr . In the north of the pasture there is a pond (approx. 2.5 hectares) that is almost completely overgrown with different types of reed beds such as frog spoons and water feathers. The pasture is the preferred breeding ground for numerous waterfowl, which can often be found here in spring and autumn.

In accordance with Section 20 of the State Law of North Rhine-Westphalia (LG NW), nature reserves are designated for conservation, for scientific, natural history, regional or geological reasons, or because of their rarity or special nature.

In the NSG 'Auf dem Stein' the main aim is to maintain a low-disturbance and near-natural wet biotope, which allows fishing to be used, but which necessarily includes the omission of forestry use.

Short term

The protection is placed for the preservation, creation and restoration of a nationally significant biotope with rare and endangered species of flora and fauna typical of the landscape, which is characterized above all by water biotopes, reeds , swamp and alluvial forests as well as deciduous forests. The NSG is also a resting place and winter quarters for migratory birds.

Long term

In the long term, the forest areas are to be restored, which as deciduous forest areas with their various stages of development are to develop a natural structural diversity. The natural rejuvenation of the trees has priority over new plantings.

There is an intensely differentiated vegetation east of the duck pond. In particular, large reed beds , gray willow bushes and alder forests are found here .
