Solenopsora candicans , also known as chalk lichen ,is a lichen that grows on limestone cliffs.

description

Solenopsora candicans is a Mediterranean-Western European lichen that can be found on limestone cliffs in flat or hilly landscapes and occurs in Germany from the west ( Eifel ) to the Thuringian region. The white thallus is crusty, rather thick and broad, runs out radially at the marginal lobe. The spores of this rare species are rather colorless or light.

Location

Grainy and rough substrates such as calcareous ( sand-lime brick ) and dolomitic rocks (dolomite) in semi-arid grasslands are preferred as a location . Its spread is unlikely in southern German limestone regions. It occurs in Mediterranean to temperate areas of southern and western Europe. A stronger distribution of the lichen is often only recognizable on partially shaded to sunny vertical surfaces, presumably with higher humidity, in hilly ( kollin ) locations up to the low mountain range ( submontane ).
