The Sho monastery ( Tib . : sho dgon ) or Martshang ( smar tshang ) monastery in Kham is the ancestral monastery of the teachings of Marpa Kagyu . It belongs to the group of eight small schools in the Kagyu school tradition of Tibetan Buddhism ( Vajrayana ).
The monastery was founded in 1167 by Martshang Sherab Sengge , who was a student of Phagmodrupa from the Phagdru Kagyu School.
It is in the area of today's district Zhag'yab County the town of Qamdo of Tibet Autonomous Region in China .
