The Marpa-Kagyü ( Tib . : smar pa bka 'brgyud ) or Martshang-Kagyü ( Tib . : smar tshang bka' brgyud ) school , named after the town of Markam , is one of the so-called "eight smaller schools" of the Kagyü tradition Tibetan Buddhism ( Vajrayana ).

history

It was founded by Marpa Sherab Yeshe (1135–1203), a student of Phagmodrupa from the Phagdru Kagyu school. The parent monastery Martshang ( smar tshang ; Chin. Macang si 玛 仓 寺) was founded by him. It later merged with the Pelyül tradition of the Nyingma School in Kham .

Famous masters of the school were Gyelwa Yanggön Yeshe Gyeltshen ( rgyal ba yang dgon ye shes rgyal mtshan ) and Nal Rinchen Lingpa ( rnal rin chen gling pa ).
