Marwainzi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marwainzi are a Luwian group of gods in the wake of the god Santa . The Hittites them meet the Markuwaya and the Lydians the Mariwda. Their exact function is unknown, they could perhaps belong to the "seven gods". The three names can be traced back to Uranatolian * marguaya- "dark".

Together with the plague god Iyarri , the Marwainzi received victims of atonement to end a plague in the Hittite army.

In a hieroglyphic Luwian inscription from Kululu in Tabal , the Marwainzi and Santa are called to protect the grave of Panuni. Another inscription names the deity Nikarawa as "Marwanese", which means that this deity may belong to the Marwainzi.

The Hittite Markuwaya are mentioned in rituals for the patron god . The Lydian Mariwda, together with Śãnta and Kufaw, are called to protect a grave.
