Mary-Rosa Alleyne Berry , CBE (born March 24, 1935 in Bath ) is a British cookbook author and television personality.

Berry was trained at the Cordon Bleu International Cooking School in Paris and the Bath School of Home Economics . She is best known for her role as a juror on the BBC series The Great British Bake Off . In 2012 Mary Berry was awarded the rank of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to the culinary arts .

She has published over 75 cookbooks, including The Hamlyn All Color Cookbook (1970) and Mary Berry's Baking Bible (2009). Since 2014 she has her own TV show Mary Berry Cooks .

Life

Berry was born in Bath, Somerset in 1935, the daughter of Alleyne William Steward Berry (1904-1989), the future mayor of Bath, and his wife Margaret. At the age of 13 she contracted polio , which led to the curvature of her spine and considerable permanent weakening of her left arm and left hand.

Mary Berry married in 1966; the couple had three children - two sons and a daughter. The youngest son was killed in a car accident in 1989 at the age of 19. She is involved in the charity Child Bereavement UK , which supports grieving children and families who have lost children.

In 2017 she received the TV Choice Award for Outstanding Contribution to television .
