Mary Douglas, 6th Countess of Buchan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mary Douglas, 6th Countess of Buchan (* around 1600; † before August 20, 1628 in Holyrood Palace , Edinburgh ), was a Scottish noblewoman .

Life

Her father was James Douglas, 5th Earl of Buchan ; her mother was Margaret, daughter of Walter Ogilvy, 1st Lord Ogilvy of Deskford. After the early death of her father, she inherited his father as a baby and was appointed Countess of Buchan and Lady Auchterhouse . Her mother lived until about 1614 and arranged her marriage to James Erskine , son of John Erskine, 19th Earl of Mar . The wedding took place on June 18, 1615, James was so uxoris iure the Earl of Buchan .

On March 22, 1617, the Earldom was transferred "with equal rights" to Mary and her husband by royal charter; the line of succession was extended to "the longer living and all conjugal heirs for all time". James was thus de jure the Earl of Buchan . Mary then waived all rights under her title in favor of her husband. Another possible reason for this waiver was the downgrading of the Earl of Buchan to younger titles in the "Decreet of Ranking of Nobility" of 1606, in which Mary had not been able to represent herself due to her age. This downgrading was not corrected until 1628 and the correction was confirmed by parliament in 1633.

Nothing is known about her further life. Mary died in Edinburgh, after the transfer her body was buried on August 20, 1628 in Auchterhouse .

There were five children from their marriage; the sons James (heir and later 7th Earl) and John and the daughters Mary, Margaret and Elisabeth.
