James Erskine, 6th Earl of Buchan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Erskine, 6th Earl of Buchan (* 1600 - January 1640 in London ) was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

His father was John Erskine, 19th Earl of Mar ; his mother was Mary, a daughter of Esmé Stuart, 1st Duke of Lennox . As the fourth son, also from his father's second marriage, he had no prospect of becoming his father's inheritance.

As early as 1614 his marriage to Mary Douglas , suo iure (in her own right) Countess of Buchan, was arranged. The wedding took place on June 18, 1615, and James became iure uxoris Earl of Buchan.

On March 22, 1617, the Earldom was transferred "with equal rights" to James and his wife by royal charter; the line of succession was extended to "the longer living and all conjugal heirs for all time". James thus also became the Earl of Buchan suo iure . Mary then waived all rights under her title in favor of her husband.

Nothing is known about James and Mary's time together. After her death in 1628 he lived most of the time in England, where he was one of the gentlemen of the bedchamber of Charles I. He died in London, after the transfer his body was buried with Mary in Auchterhouse. Since he died without a will, his possessions were administered until 1647.

There were five children from his marriage to Mary; the sons James (heir and later 7th Earl) and John and the daughters Mary, Margaret and Elisabeth. From his second marriage between 1630 and 1635 with Dorothy, daughter of Sir Phillip Knyvett, 1st Baronet (of Buckenham), there was another son, Henry.
