Mary Ellen Popel (born June 20, 1920 in Santa Monica , California , USA ) is an American actress .

Life

Mary Ellen Popel grew up as the daughter of a successful banker in a wealthy family. Since her parents did not support her desire to become an actress, she left her hometown at the age of 17 to become a theater actress in New York. After performing in several small roles, she decided to return to her home state of California to start a Hollywood cinema career.

There she met the German Conrad Veidt , who recommended her for a small role in the film Blackmail ( A Womens Face ). Popel subsequently appeared again more often in the theater and took on smaller roles in films and TV series.

Her first major role was played Popel 1949. In the film The drug addicted ( She Shoulda Said No! ) By Sam Newfield she played Rita. The black and white film was considered so shocking that it was banned in Finland, among others. Appearances in The Ten Commandments and the TV series Highway Patrol followed.

Rumors of drug problems kept her temporarily withdrawing from the film business and increasingly turning to the not so public appearances in various theaters in California.

In 1962 Booger was on screen for the last time in The Last Train and Men Who Love Life . The last train from Blake Edwards was her biggest success. After 1962 she avoided the public.
