Mary Lewis

Mary Lewis (born October 18, 1960 ) is a former judoka from the United States. She was third in the 1980 World Cup and won the 1983 Pan American Games.

Athletic career

Mary Lewis fought until 1980 in the super lightweight, the weight class up to 48 kilograms. In 1979 she won her first US championship. At the end of November 1980, the first World Championships for women took place in New York City . Mary Lewis won a bronze medal behind British Jane Bridge and Italian Anna de Novellis .

In 1981 Lewis switched to half-light weight, the weight class up to 52 kilograms. In 1982 she won her first US championship title here, followed by two more titles in 1984 and 1986. At the 1982 World Championships she was defeated by the Swede Ann Löf in the round of 16 .

In 1983, women's judo competitions were held for the first time at the Pan American Games in Caracas . In the semi-light weight final, Lewis and the Canadian Nancy Clayton faced each other and Lewis won the gold medal. 1985 Lewis won another title at the Pan American Championships.
