Josef Clemens von Westerholt zu Westerholt and Alst (baptized name: Josef Clemens August Maria) (born November 14, 1720 in Westerholt Castle ; † May 11, 1766 ibid) was the Elector of Cologne Chamberlain and Fideikommißherr in Westerholt.

Life

Origin and family

Josef Clemens von Westerholt zu Westerholt and Alst came from the Westphalian noble family von Westerholt and was the son of Ferdinand Otto von Westerholt (1682–1741) and his wife Maria Agnes von Ketteler zu Sythen (1686–1724). In April 1744 he married Wilhelmina Franziska von der Recke zu Horst and Uhlenbrock (* 1726). The daughter Wilhelmine Friederike (1757-1820, ⚭ 1769 Freiherr Ludolf Friedrich Adolf von Boenen zu Berge (1747-1829)) emerged from the marriage. Whose children were

Josef's great uncle Johann Heinrich von Gysenberg died in 1725 without leaving any descendants. So he inherited the Gysenberg family estate . The inheritance was tied to the condition that the name Gysenberg was used. On March 27, 1744, Emperor Charles VII granted permission to unite with the name Gysenberg and elevated the family to the status of imperial baron .

Act

In 1741, after the death of his father, Josef Clemens succeeded him. With the revolt to the knighthood of Münster in 1744 he became a member of the state parliament . Three years later he was a member of the knighthood of Berg . In 1745 he became a chamberlain in Kurköln and was a privy councilor. With his death in 1762 the male line of the Westerholt family died out.
