Life

Origin and family

Wilhelm von Westerholt-Gysenberg came from the Westphalian noble family von Westerholt . His father Friedrich Ludolf von Boenen was raised to the rank of count in 1790 by the Elector Karl-Theodor von Pfalz-Bayern on the condition that he was named Westerholt by marrying Franziska Wilhelmina Freifrau zu Westerholt. On August 2, 1810 he married Frein Martha Charlotte von Fürstenberg - against the will of the bride's father - and moved into the newly built Westerholt Castle . The marriage had four children. The son Friedrich Otto was later Fideikommissar on Westerholt. Wilhelm's older brother Maximilian Friedrich (heir) was from 1806 to 1808 as head stable master in the service of Joachim Murat , Napoleon's brother-in-law and his governor in the Grand Duchy of Berg . Wilhelm's sister Maria was a childhood sweetheart of Beethoven and the founder of the Elverfeld family .

Professional background

Wilhelm initially studied for two years at the University of Münster and became canon in Münster on May 1, 1802 . Since he did not feel at ease in his spiritual position, he began to study law in Bonn in 1805 . In 1808 he finally renounced the cathedral capital and left it to his nephew. From then on he helped his father, governor of the Duke of Arenberg , with the administrative business until he became Maire von Buer in 1811 .

On May 1, 1816 Wilhelm was appointed the first district commissioner of the Recklinghausen district and in 1826 was elected to the Westphalian provincial parliament for knighthood in the electoral district of West Münster . He was initially elected as a deputy member for Adolf Heidenreich Droste zu Vischering . But since he died in 1826 during the parliamentary deliberations, Westerholt and Gysenberg then took part in the further deliberations and was a regular member of the regional parliament in 1828. In the election of the district administrator on December 16, 1829, he was elected with 8 to 7 votes against Friedrich Karl Devens, but Heinrich Friedrich Karl vom und zum Stein , who accused him of laziness and incompetence, pushed through the election of Devens in a second ballot. who was then appointed by the Prussian king on July 6, 1830 .

In 1836 Wilhelm acted as a member of the Recklinghausen district assembly and in 1844, after the introduction of the rural community order for the province of Westphalia, he became the deputy of the bailiff in Buer and mayor in Westerholt.
