Mary Mahoney Award

The Mary Mahoney Award is a biennial award given to nurses or groups of nurses who have contributed to opening up or developing opportunities for ethnic minorities in care. The nominees must also have made a decisive contribution to general care; Their successes in promoting integration, perception and further development of minorities in care must be permanent and verifiable.

The accompanying Mary Mahoney Medal is a gold medal with a diamond set in it.

Emergence

The award was presented in 1936 by the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (dt NACGN. National Association colored graduate nurses ) donated. This is to commemorate the achievements of Mary Eliza Mahoney (1845-1926), who paved the way for many others as the first registered African American nurse in the United States of America . In 1951, the NACGN organization became part of the American Nurses Association (ANA), which took over the award and has given it ever since.
