Mary Washington House in Fredericksburg

The Mary Washington House , in 1200 Charles Street in the city of Fredericksburg , is the house where George Washington's mother Mary Ball Washington lived at the end of their lives.

George Washington bought this house for his mother in 1772 and she lived there until her death in 1789. Mary's husband and George's father, Augustine Washington , had died in Fredericksburg in 1743. The house is on the corner of Charles and Lewis Streets and the Kenmore Plantation , the estate of Mary's daughter Betty Washington Lewis , was within walking distance. The future President George Washington received his mother's blessing there before his inauguration in 1789.

The Mary Washington House is close to the college named after her, the University of Mary Washington . In 1891 the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities purchased the house. At times it was planned to dismantle the building and send it to the Chicago World's Fair . The house has since been restored and is open to the public. The house is one of the landmarks of the city of Fredericksburg.
