Betty Washington Lewis

Betty Washington Lewis (born Elizabeth Washington; born June 20, 1733 in Westmoreland County , Colony of Virginia , † March 31, 1797 in Culpeper , Virginia ) was the only sister of George Washington who survived childhood. She was the eldest daughter of Augustine Washington and his second wife, Mary Ball Washington . She is considered one of the "founding mothers" of America.

She became the second wife of Fielding Lewis, a distant cousin, on May 7, 1750. Her husband bought land outside of Fredericksburg, Virginia and they built the Kenmore Plantation there . During the War of Independence , her husband served in the army and ran an arms factory. Together they had eleven children, of whom only five sons and one daughter reached adulthood:

Betty Washington Lewis died in 1797 while staying with her daughter Betty Lewis Carter in Culpeper County.

Their son Lawrence Lewis married Martha Washington's granddaughter , Eleanor Parke Custis . Near the Ferry Farm , two streets are named after Betty Washington Lewis and her husband: Fielding Circle and Betty Lewis Drive.
