The University of Mary Washington (also known as UMW , Mary Washington or Mary Wash ; until 2004: Mary Washington College ) is a public university in Fredericksburg , Virginia . The college was founded in 1906.
history
On March 14, 1908, Virginia Governor Claude A. Swanson signed a law establishing a normal school , the Normal and Industrial School for Women . In 1938 the college was renamed "Mary Washington College". Mary Ball Washington was the second wife of Augustine Washington and the mother of George Washington .
In 1944 the university and the renowned University of Virginia in Charlottesville , which was then only open to men, began . Mary Washington College served as a "women's college" for the University of Virginia until it opened to female students in 1972. Mary Washington College had already admitted men in 1970 ( coeducation ).
In the mid-1960s, segregation had been abolished at the university.
Infrastructure
The Alvey Hall , named after Edward Alvey Jr. , Chair of the Faculty from 1936 to 1971, is the newest building on campus along with Arrington Hall . It is used by students who are in their first year at this school. Both buildings were completed in 1993.

Culture
The Ridderhof Martin Gallery , is a museum on the university campus. In addition to the approximately 5,000 permanent art objects, exhibitions are organized here every year, with exhibits from other museums in the United States. The museum is open to the public.
competitive sport
As is common at US universities, the University of Mary Washington supports not only popular student sports but also highly qualified student university teams. The university plays in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Capital Athletic Conference . The UWM sports team is called the Eagles.
The university offers basketball , lacrosse , rowing , soccer , swimming and tennis , among others .
