Mary Whelan is an Irish diplomat .

Life

Whelan has served in the Irish Foreign Office's diplomatic service since 1973 . During her diplomatic career, which she began at the post of Third Secretary, she was Ireland's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva from 2001 to 2006 .

In 2009 Whelan became the Irish Ambassador to the Netherlands and the Permanent Representative of Ireland to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons . In both positions she replaced Richard Ryan . In 2014 Whelan was appointed Irish Ambassador to Austria .
