Friedrich Salomon Vögelin (born July 26, 1837 in Zurich ; † October 17, 1888 there ) was a Swiss theologian , art historian and politician .

Life

Friedrich Salomon Vögelin came from a family of theologians in Zurich. After leaving school in Zurich, he studied theology at the University of Basel and attended lectures by the cultural and art historian Jacob Burckhardt . After studying art history in Heidelberg and Berlin , he found a job as a pastor in Uster , but was controversial due to his reform theological tendencies. After being employed as a lecturer in Swiss history in Küsnacht, he was appointed to the newly created chair for cultural and art history at the University of Zurich in 1870, together with Johann Rudolf Rahn . In addition, Vögelin, a supporter of the radical democratic movement since his time in Uster, was politically active. After the parliamentary elections in 1875 , he was the first workers' representative on the National Council until 1888.

Friedrich Salomon Vögelin campaigned for the protection of monuments and the maintenance of the national art heritage. Together with his friend Heinrich Angst , he campaigned for the creation of the Swiss National Museum . He wrote a large number of articles on art history, most of which were published in the New Year's newspapers of the Zurich City Library. It was also Salomon Vögelin who rediscovered the famous Holbein table on the screed of the former Zurich City Library, which is now kept in the Swiss National Museum as a deposit from the Zurich Central Library.

He found his final resting place in the Sihlfeld cemetery .
