Masao Kato

Masao Katō ( Japanese 加藤 正 夫 , Katō Masao ; born March 15, 1947 in Asakura , Fukuoka Prefecture ; † December 30, 2004 ) was a Japanese Go player who was known for his combative style of play.

He was a student of Minoru Kitani and turned professional in 1964. In 1978 he obtained the 9th Dan. Katō won a total of 47 titles in his career. He is one of the few players who have won more than 1,200 tournament games (1253 wins to 664 losses).

Masao Katō became vice president of Nihon Ki-in in 2002 and its chairman in June 2004. He died on December 30, 2004 of complications from a cerebral infarction.
