Masrur Barzani ( Kurdish مەسروور بارزانی Mesrûr Barzanî ; Arabic مسرور بارزاني, DMG Masrūr Bārizānī ; * March 2, 1969 in Choman , Erbil Governorate ), also Masrour Barzani , is a Kurdish - Iraqi politician. He is a member of the Democratic Party of Kurdistan (PDK) and a former Peshmerga fighter . He has been Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region since July 10, 2019 .

Life

Barzani was born into a locally influential family. His father Masud Barzani would later become President of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region from 2005 to 2017. In 1985, at the age of 16, he joined the Kurdish resistance fighters known as Peshmerga. He took an active part in the Battle of Khwakurk against Saddam Hussein's army in 1988. He also participated in the 1991 uprising against Saddam Hussein after the second Gulf War , which was put down with poison gas. He spent his school days in Iran .

After witnessing the restoration of peace in the region in 1992, he traveled to London for a year to study English . After successfully completing this, he received a BA with Honors in International Studies from the American University in Washington, DC . Here he also worked as a lobbyist for the Kurdish cause in the United States.

In 1998 he returned to the Kurdistan region and was elected to the Central Committee by the 12th Congress of the PDK. Later that year he became part of the leadership of the Kurdistan Democratic Party before being appointed director general of the Protection and Secret Service. In 2010 he was selected as a Politburo member of the PDK. In 2012, he was appointed Chancellor of the Kurdistan Region Security Council by his father, the President of the Kurdistan Region, Masoud Barzani, in order to oversee the security of the region, military intelligence and existing intelligence agencies. The Security Council later played an important role under his leadership in the Kurds' struggle against the Islamic State .

On July 10, 2019, he was sworn in as Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government with 88 votes from 97 legislators in the Kurdish Parliament .

In an article he wrote for the Washington Post in 2016 , he advocated independence or an independence referendum for Kurdish areas in Iraq.

Personal

Barzani is married and has four children, three sons and a daughter. He is fluent in Kurdish , Persian and English as well as Arabic .
