The Kulturfabrik Hoyerswerda (short: Kufa ) is an association in the Saxon city of Hoyerswerda .

history

The building at Braugasse 1, at the corner of Schloßstraße, in May 2010 before the renovation

The club was founded on October 24, 1994 in the "Laden", a former youth club. The founding members came largely from the “alternative” youth culture scene and wanted to create a center for socio-cultural work. The “shop” turned out to be too small, so that in 1996 the association moved to the children's and youth club at Braugasse 1 on the market and opened the “Stilbruch” café there. In 1999, the association moved to an alternative location due to planned renovations and extensions to the house. The time in this former children's and youth home on Alte Berliner Strasse was originally supposed to last two to three years. It was not until 2010 that the conversion of the social building, which was built in 1885 opposite the old town hall , into a community center was approved. After 16 years on the outskirts, the club was able to move back to its old domicile in September 2015. In the listed building there is space for over 40 initiatives and associations, a theater and concert hall, the natural science and technical center for children and young people (NATZ), a tourist information center for the Lusatian Lake District , workshops, as well as media and training rooms. The number of visitors to Kufa rose to 40,000 annually.

The association has been showing films since the beginning, now in its own arthouse cinema "Blow-Up". In 1997, the Kulturfabrik, with the Profolk association and with the support of the Hoyerswerda songwriter Gerhard Gundermann, brought the Germany-wide songwriters' meeting "Hoyschrecke" to life. Gundermann played several concerts in the Kufa shortly before his death on June 21, 1998. The Kulturfabrik is currently building an archive of sound carriers, videos and memorabilia of Gerhard Gundermann.

In 2007 the Kulturfabrik put on a play about the riots in Hoyerswerda in 1991 with young people . In 2012, the project “Mitwisser sucht”, which together with the RAA Hoyerswerda educates young people about these riots, was nominated for the Saxon Prize for Democracy .

The Kulturfabrik is committed to urban development with special consideration of the shrinking population of Hoyerswerda. In 2008 she was awarded the Saxon Prize for Sociocultural Commitment by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony for the project “The third city - Hoyerswerda is coming together” . In 2019 the Kulturfabrik received the Saxon Prize for Cultural Education, which is awarded by the Saxon State Ministry for Science and Art in cooperation with the State Association of Socioculture Saxony. The sixth dance theater project of the KuFa dance company, the piece "Eine Stadt tanzt: Manifest!"

At the festival, the "Hoyschrecke" (a metal insect) is awarded to the winner of an audience and a jury award. Until 2005, a prize was also awarded for the best lyrics.
