The association Profolk eV ( spelling PROFOLK ) is a non-profit and independent organization to protect the interests of people, associations and organizations in the fields of song, folk and world music. He basically works on a voluntary basis with volunteers. The association pursues exclusively and directly non-profit purposes. He's in the Register of Berlin - Charlottenburg registered; However, the office is located in the Brandenburg town of Liebenwalde .

Profolk was founded on November 25, 1984 in Göttingen . Since then, the main goal of the association has been to represent interests in folk and world music in relation to politics, business and society. Profolk is the only federal association in Germany for this genre and a member of the German Music Council . The association operates worldwide.

Members

Members of the association include clubs and cultural initiatives, individual musicians and bands, agencies, instrument makers, journalists and broadcast editors, music labels and publishers as well as organizers.

tasks and goals

The main task of the association is to create better framework conditions for folk and world music. This genre is established and supported in Germany through constant exchange with politics, business and the German Music Council. The association also supports the organization and implementation of concerts, workshops and similar activities. The aim is also to promote musical, cultural and human diversity.

The association was founded by Jürgen Schmitz from the Folk Initiative Bremen , Gerd Wagner from Marburg ( Folk Club Marburg), Manfred Malzahn from the Folk Club Iserlohn , Reiner Bruchhaus from the Folk Initiative Bergneustadt ( Gummersbach ), Almut Kückelhaus, from the Folk Club Siegen ( Altena ) and Harald Schmidt from the Folkfreunde Niederrhein, Duisburg .

Profolk is a co-founder of the international dance and folk festival in Rudolstadt . Profolk presents the music scene he represents at national and international trade fairs and festivals such as the Windros Festival in Schwerin , the Liedertage Boltenhagen , the Festival "Music and Politics" in Berlin , the Nuremberg Bardentreffen , the Hoyschrecke song festival in Hoyerswerda , the WOMEX (World Music Expo) - international trade fair in various European countries, the Art & Ethno Forum “Without Borders” in Balchik / Bulgaria and the Showcase in Scotland . The association takes part in the Folk Alliance International (FAI) in February 2019 in Montreal / Canada

History Profolk / "Deutscher Folk Förderpreis"

Since 1991 the annual Tanz & Folkfest Rudolstadt , also known as the Rudolstadt Festival, has been taking place on the initiative of Profolk eV . The beginnings of Rudolstadt festival date back to 1955. At that time in Rudolstadt the "first Festival of German Folk Dance ”, which developed into a GDR dance and folklore festival with strong Eastern European participation. Then in 1991 the new start with a completely different concept: initially intended as a forum for the classical folk scene, the event soon established itself as a world music festival of international renown. The German Folk Promotion Prize (DFF) was awarded at this festival from 1992 to 2001. These prizes were awarded by Tanz & Folkfest Rudolstadt , PROFOLK eV, Folk-MICHEL and the MDR . From 2002 until now this award was renamed “ Ruth - The German World Music Award ”. The winners of the respective prizes as follows:

From 2006 onwards, PROFOLK eV withdrew from the RUTH World Music Prize as the awarding of the prizes was no longer limited to young artists and this could not be reconciled with the association's statutes.
