Breitscheidt is a municipality in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Hamm (Sieg) .

geography

The local community is north of the Sieg - Wied - Wasserscheide above Pracht and Hamm (Sieg) , which are in the north; other immediate neighboring communities are Seelbach , Hilgenroth and Birkenbeul .

In addition to the eponymous place, Breitscheidt also includes the districts of Heide, Mühlental, Pfannenschoppen, Thalhausen and Unterschützen.

history

Breitscheidt and Unterschützen have been part of the County of Sayn since the Middle Ages . After the introduction of the Reformation in the County of Sayn, the inhabitants were first Lutheran and later reformed . After the county of Sayn was divided in the 17th century, Breitscheidt and Unterschützen belonged to the County of Sayn-Hachenburg . Breitscheidt formed a separate administrative district called "Sende" within the parish of Hamm , to which the places Thalhausen and Unterschützen also belonged. The county of Sayn-Hachenburg fell to the princes of Nassau-Weilburg by inheritance in 1799 . In 1806 the two Nassau princes joined the Napoleonic Rhine Confederation , so that from 1806 the region belonged to the Duchy of Nassau . Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the area was ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia .

Under the Prussian administration, Breitscheidt was assigned to the mayor's office in Hamm in the newly established Altenkirchen district , which from 1822 belonged to the Rhine Province .

Today's community was created on June 7, 1969 through a new formation from the communities Breitscheidt (529 inhabitants) and Unterschützen (118 inhabitants).
