Reiferscheid is a municipality in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld .

Reiferscheid is on the edge of the Rhine-Westerwald nature park , at almost 300 m above sea level. NHN.

history

Reiferscheid belonged to the county of Sayn-Hachenburg and the parish of Flammersfeld until 1806 . The county of Sayn-Hachenburg fell to the princes of Nassau-Weilburg by inheritance in 1799 . In 1806 the two Nassau princes joined the Napoleonic Rhine Confederation , so that from 1806 the region belonged to the Duchy of Nassau . A participant in the Congress of Vienna made (1815) agreements, the territory of the former saynischen counties was to the Kingdom of Prussia ceded .

Under the Prussian administration, Reiferscheid was assigned to the Flammersfeld mayor in the newly established Altenkirchen district , which from 1822 belonged to the Rhine Province .

Municipal council

The local council in Reiferscheid consists of eight council members who were elected in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Jahn Michael Schmuck became the local mayor of Reiferscheid on August 6, 2019. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was elected for five years with 84.90% of the vote. Jahn Michael Schmuck's predecessor was Friedhelm Bay, who after 25 years in office had no longer stood as a candidate for this position.

In 1983 a choir was formed, which continues to shape the cultural life of the village under the name Mixed Choir Reiferscheid .

Economy and Infrastructure

Reiferscheid was originally purely agricultural, today the areas around the place are cultivated by larger companies / business communities from surrounding villages, in the place only hobby animals are kept.

In the past there was a (at times two) mom and pop shop in Reiferscheid, a blacksmith, a wheelwright (Wagner) and a shoemaker, and later a grinding shop. These establishments were gradually closed. A small village pub has been run as a family business since 1954; on June 30, 2010 the tap was turned up and the pub closed.

The closest basic center is Flammersfeld about one kilometer away.

In the 1950s, a communal fridge-freezer-wash house was built in Reiferscheid and operated as an interest group ( freezing community ). There were two large fully automatic washing machines, a refrigerator and separately lockable freezer compartments available to the members, a very progressive facility in rural areas at this time, which offered unprecedented luxury. Washing machines and refrigerated cabinets in individual households were unaffordable, there were families with them who made a living from their small fields and pastures with two to three cows and three to four pigs and a few poultry.

In the center of the village is “Der Platz”, a large open space that has always been owned by “interested parties” and used as garden, arable and pasture space. Today this “place” has been redesigned by the community and voluntary helpers into a playground, football field and “place for everything that is fun”.

The “freezer house” at the foot of the square was expanded into a small youth club at the end of the 1970s, after the freezer was taken out of service, by the village youth, supported by grants from the community and the hunting association.

An open area was later paved with gravel and serves as a fairground for the sociable summer festival and other activities, such as the Reiferscheider Christmas market, which was held for the first time in 2008.

Since 2006, private initiative has continued to work on this freezer, adding a roof, gutting the freezer as far as possible and installing new sanitary facilities.

education

The Reiferscheider have been going to school in Flammersfeld for a long time (today only elementary school); only the turmoil of World War II resulted in the occasional substitute tuition being held in private homes. In the secondary school, schools in Altenkirchen, Horhausen and Neustadt (Wied) are attended.
