Oberirsen is a municipality in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld .
Geographical location
The main town of Oberirsen is located in the Scharfenbach valley between Rimbach in the north and Marenbach in the west. Neighboring towns are Wölmersen in the southeast and Birnbach in the south. Rimbach borders in the north on Mittelirsen in Leuscheider Land , which is already in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The districts of Marenbach and Rimbach belong to Oberirsen.
history
It is believed that the settlement took place between the 6th and 9th centuries. The first written mention is from 1219.
In March 1945, four Wehrmacht officers were sentenced to death in Oberirsen and Rimbach because they failed to blow up the Ludendorff Bridge near Remagen. The fifth co-defendant, Captain Bratge, was sentenced to death in absentia. At the time of his conviction he was already a prisoner of war. The Flying Stand Court West was ordered by a Führer decree . Three of the officers sentenced to death are buried on the war cemetery in Birnbach (coordinates: 50 ° 42 ′ 22.5 ″ N , 7 ° 35 ′ 11.8 ″ E ).
On May 1, 1969, the two previously independent communities of Marenbach and Rimbach were incorporated.

Municipal council
The council in Oberirsen consists of twelve council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Wilfried Stahl became the mayor of Oberirsen in 1994. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in office for a further five years with a share of the vote of 53.26%.
