history

Hilgenroth was first mentioned in a document in 1428. The name of the settlement at that time was Heiligenrode or Hilgerode . These names suggest that the village was cleared from the Middle Ages.

Hilgenroth was an important place of pilgrimage in the 15th century , to which numerous people from far away parts of the Westerwald as well as from Westphalia , the Eifel , the Rhineland and the Sauerland made pilgrimages. The center of the community is still the Hilgenrother Church. A list of miracle reports in the Hilgenroth church has come down to us from the 15th century (Hilgenrother Mirakelbuch ). After the introduction of the Reformation in the county of Sayn , to which Hilgenroth belonged, the pilgrimages to Hilgenroth ended. After the division of the County of Sayn in the 17th century, Hilgenroth belonged to the County of Sayn-Altenkirchen . Since 1665, the Hilgenrother Church has been used as a simultaneum by Lutherans and Reformed people. At the instigation of the Saynian estates , the Latin school in Altenkirchen was reopened at the beginning of the 18th century and the pastor of Hilgenroth was given the position of rector. During the First Coalition War (1792–1797), French troops of the Sambre Maas Army marched through the Westerwald through the local community of Hilgenroth and left considerable damage.

Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Hilgenroth came to the Principality of Nassau-Usingen in 1803 , which was added to the Duchy of Nassau in 1806 . After the Congress of Vienna , Hilgenroth belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia . In the Prussian time Hilgenroth belonged to the mayor Altenkirchen in Altenkirchen district and belonged to Koblenz in the Prussian Rhine Province .

During the Second World War , Hilgenroth was a stage stop for the Wehrmacht as early as 1940 and was used again in 1944 and 1945 to billet tank units . In early 1945 an American bomber ( B 17 ) crashed near Hilgenroth. After the passage of German units, the Americans marched into Hilgenroth on March 27, 1945 and set up heavy artillery positions in the village. Hilgenroth was spared from fighting, however.

Hilgenroth has been part of Rhineland-Palatinate since the state was founded .

coat of arms

Hilgenroth coat of arms
Blazon : "The coat of arms of the local community Hilgenroth shows under a red shield head ,dividedby five pinnacles , inside a blue armored and tongued golden leopard lion , split in blue and silver, in front a day-lit church tower , behind a red lily cross ."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The golden leopard on a red background takes up the coat of arms of the Counts of Sayn and creates a territorial reference to the County of Sayn , to which Hilgenroth belonged since the Middle Ages. The battlements under the lion are a symbol of the former village wall around Hilgenroth, which was a special feature of the area as a fortification. The church tower is symbolic of the church in Hilgenroth, which is a regional specialty due to its construction and the church tower itself is also the oldest building in Hilgenroth. The lily cross symbolizes the past of the local community Hilgenroth as an important pilgrimage site in the past and establishes a connection to the pilgrimages to Hilgenroth. The blue and white coloring in the lower part of the coat of arms indicates the club life in Hilgenroth through the blue and white colors of the Hilgenroth men's choir, which has existed since 1866.

Attractions

The evangelical parish church Hilgenroth with its oldest building structure, the tower, has Roman origins. The cornering of the tower towards the nave is remarkable. It can be traced back to the complicated building history and indicates that in the original state in Hilgenroth there was a more extensive multi-aisle facility. The late Gothic side aisle of the church, the chapel of Our Lady , dated 1433, originally served as a chapel of grace for an image of Our Lady . After Hilgenroth had lost its importance as a place of pilgrimage as a result of the Reformation, the church could no longer be maintained and became dilapidated. In the Baroque era , the Romanesque main nave was therefore laid down behind the tower and the Gothic side aisle continued to be used as the only remaining nave. In this way, the corner of the church tower was created to the nave. The Protestant church in Hilgenroth today shows a succession of different architectural styles since the Middle Ages. With the church tower there is a reference to the Romanesque, today's main nave was built during the Gothic and final modifications in the Baroque. Worth mentioning are the colorful church windows of the Gothic choir , which were created in the 1960s and, thanks to their color, bathe the church building in a warm light.

To the left of the Marienthaler Bach lies the Marienthaler Kreuzweg on a hill in the Hilgenroth district . It was built between 1853 and 1869. In the immediate vicinity was the Marienthal monastery near Seelbach.
