Seelbach bei Hamm (Sieg) is a municipality in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Hamm (Sieg) .
geography
Geographical location
Seelbach is located on the northern edge of the Westerwald north of the Sieg - Wied - Wasserscheide , and about 2 km southeast of Hamm (Sieg) , near the Marienthal monastery to the south . Other neighboring communities are Roth in the northeast and Breitscheidt in the west.
Community structure
The municipality includes the districts of Ober- and Niederseelbach as well as Marienthal, which is home to the former Marienthal monastery , today the conference and educational center of the Archdiocese of Cologne ("Haus Marienthal").
history
Until the middle of the 17th century, Seelbach belonged to the county of Sayn . After the introduction of the Reformation in the county of Sayn, the inhabitants were first Lutheran and later reformed . After the division of the County of Sayn in the 17th century, Seelbach belonged to the County of Sayn-Hachenburg .
Seelbach formed a separate administrative district called “Sende” within the parish of Hamm , which also included the villages of Ober- and Niederseelbach, the Marienthal monastery and the Oberselterberg farm. The county of Sayn-Hachenburg fell to the princes of Nassau-Weilburg by inheritance in 1799 . In connection with the formation of the Rhine Confederation , Seelbach came to the newly established Duchy of Nassau in 1806 .
Due to the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region was ceded to the Kingdom of Prussia . Seelbach was included in the Prussian administration mayoralty Hamm in the newly built district Altenkirchen in Koblenz assigned, that of 1822 to the Rhine province belonged.
On September 1, 1973 the community name was changed from "Seelbach, Amt Hamm" to "Seelbach bei Hamm (Sieg)".

The local mayor of Seelbach is Wolfgang Schumacher. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was elected with 89.02% of the vote. Schuhmacher is the successor to Gerd-Rainer Birkenbeul, who held the office for 30 years.

Seelbach is served by bus line 261, which runs from Hamm (Sieg) to Hilgenroth . In the Marienthal district of Seelbach there is also the “Kloster Marienthal” train stop on the Limburg – Altenkirchen (formerly Oberwesterwaldbahn) line, on which the RB 90 trains run from Au (Sieg) via Altenkirchen , Hachenburg and Westerburg to Limburg (Lahn) .
