About this picture

Orfgen is a municipality in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld .

geography

The place is about two kilometers north of Flammersfeld , not far from the meeting point of Bundesstraße 256 and Landesstraße 267 near Schürdt .

history

Orfgen was first mentioned in writing from 1427–1430 in the Miracle Book of the Church of Hilgenroth . It is not known exactly where the place name comes from. The name of Orfgen has changed several times since then: Orffe (1452), Orffge (1470, 1523), Orffgen (1576), Orfgen (1675) - other forms are known. Orfgen was part of the Flammersfeld parish early on (1452) . The parishes were also administrative districts in the county of Sayn . The parish court of Flammersfeld belonged to the high fortress Birnbach -Altenkirchen (from 1430) and later (1636) to the district court of Hachenburg .

In the Middle Ages Orfgen was part of the County of Sayn . After the introduction of the Reformation in County Sayn, the inhabitants became Lutheran and later Reformed. After the division of the County of Sayn in the 17th century, Orfgen belonged to the County of Sayn-Hachenburg .

The municipality of Orfgen consists of four, previously five, districts: Hofacker, Berg, Hahn and Höllburg. Ziegenhahn is now part of the Ziegenhain community . The municipality of Orfgen founded its own school in 1755, as the largest town in the Flammersfeld parish, for which premises in Orfgen and Berg were rented. In 1842 the local council decided to unite the evacuated school in Berg (for the districts Hahn and Berg) with the school of Orfgen and to build its own school building. The building was completed in 1846. It stood a little more diagonally and below the building that is still standing today on the same site at Hofacker. The teacher August Flammersfeld from Oberbieber founded a reading club in 1905 and a public library in Berlin with the support of the “ Society for the Spread of Popular Education ” . In 1908 the local council decided to build a new school - supposedly because the old school had become dilapidated. In reality it should have been about creating a new building with suitable rooms for this public library. The old half-timbered building from 1846 was sold for 500 marks , dismantled and rebuilt in the Höllburg district, where it still stands today. A new school was opened on the old school premises in 1910, which was in operation until the closure of small village schools in the 1960s. Starting in August 1965, the school was taken over by the central school in the neighboring municipality of Flammersfeld and the old school building came into private hands. It still stands today and has been renovated since 2004.

In 1917 Orfgen received a telephone connection, and in 1925 the village was connected to the power grid. Water was taken from wells and springs until the community was connected to the Flammersfeld water network in 1984. It was not until 2007 that the last remains of the former spring water extraction were removed.

Since 1932 there has been a rifle club in Orfgen, the KKSV - small caliber rifle club Orfgen with its own rifle house , shooting range and an annual rifle festival .
