Oberwambach is a municipality in the Altenkirchen (Westerwald) district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Altenkirchen-Flammersfeld .

Geographical location

Oberwambach is located in the Westerwald about four kilometers south of Altenkirchen, about two kilometers away from state roads 265 and 267 and federal road 8 . The place borders in the south on the communities Rodenbach bei Puderbach and Oberdreis in the district of Neuwied . Other neighboring communities are Almersbach in the northwest, Gieleroth in the northeast and Stürzelbach in the southwest.

history

In 1464 Oberwambach was first mentioned in writing as Ouerwanenbach in a contract between the Counts of Sayn and the Counts of Wied . About u. a. In 1565 Offerwanbach and 1576 Oberwainbach the current name developed.

In 1565 the Oberwambach chapel was provided with goods. At that time she is responsible for the villages of Amteroth, Herpteroth, Gieleroth and Oberwambach. The divine service is held by the Almersbach pastor and, after the Reformation, alternately in Reformed and Lutheran form.

A local school is mentioned in 1721. In 1869 23 children died of scarlet fever in Oberwambach . A new church is built in 1870/71, an old forest chapel was demolished in 1847.

The place has been connected to the electricity grid since 1924. At the end of March 1945, shortly before the end of the Second World War , bombing by the Allies destroyed or damaged almost all houses in the town, leaving 22 people dead and many injured.
