Kunming Central Station (November 2008)

The Kunming Railway Station massacre was a terrorist attack that occurred on the evening of March 1, 2014 in Kunming City, Yunnan Province, southwest China . The result was 34 deaths.

procedure

At 9:20 pm on March 1, 2014, nine people dressed in black, seven men and two women, began to attack people indiscriminately with knives and machetes in the forecourt and in the ticket hall of Kunming Railway Station. The arriving police tried to contain the violence by blocking all three platform levels.

The terrorists killed 29 people and injured 143 (including seven police officers), some seriously. A police officer died from his injuries in hospital on March 2. All of the wounded were taken to eleven local hospitals in Kunming. The police initially tried unsuccessfully to get the attackers under control with tear gas before shooting four perpetrators, including one woman, and arresting another injured woman. The police later arrested three other people on Shangyi Street. The suspect, who was wounded at the scene, was taken to the hospital to have the wounds treated.

After the incident, all trains that were scheduled to stop in Kunming were diverted to other stations until 11:00 p.m. local time . All trains then returned to Kunming station as scheduled. The staff at Kunming Changshui International Airport also called a crisis meeting and tightened security measures while operations continued.

After initially several media of violent incidents in the population Community Dashuying (大树营社区) of the road district Jinma (金马街道) in District Guandu had reported these messages were a little later denied by the local police as "baseless rumors".

The Chinese Red Cross sent a team to Yunnan the next morning to help rescue the injured and offer psychotherapeutic help to the relatives of the victims and shocked eyewitnesses.

On March 2, armed police patrolled the area around Kunming Railway Station. In the early hours of the morning, residents began laying flowers in the square in front of the train station to mourn the dead. At 1:00 p.m., the Kunming police announced the arrest of two, and later three other suspects. Of the nine assassins, five were shot dead and four, one woman and three men, were arrested, including the alleged leader. On September 12, 2014, the three men arrested were sentenced to death and the woman was given a life sentence.

backgrounds

The incident was reported around the world. As the leader of the terrorist group, Abdurëhim Qurban ( Uighur : ئابدۇرېھىم قۇربان, Chinese  阿不都 热 依 木 · 库尔班 , Pinyin Ābùdūrèyīmù · Kù'ěrbān ). The police published photos of the four killed perpetrators and the perpetrator arrested directly at the train station. In connection with the publication of the photos, the suspicion was expressed that the perpetrators could be a command of the Islamic Party of East Turkestan (东突厥斯坦 伊斯兰 运动). A flag of the Uyghur independence movement in the version with Shahāda was discovered at the scene of the crime , as it had been used at times by the Islamic Republic of East Turkestan , which existed in parts of Kashgar from 1933 to 1934 .

This confirms the suspicion, expressed early on by the Chinese authorities, that Uighur separatists were responsible for the act of terrorism.

The Chinese state television spoke of a "violent act of terrorism". President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Keqiang offered condolences to the injured and the families of the victims.
