Massimo Montanari (* 1949 ) is an Italian historian .

He mainly deals with the Middle Ages . His research focus is agricultural and nutritional history, so that he has published a great deal on the food culture of the Middle Ages and the cultural history of nutrition in Italy as a whole. Massimo Montanari taught at the University of Catania from 1990-1994 and has worked at the University of Bologna since 1994 . In the German-speaking countries he is best known because he published the volume The Hunger and Abundance - Cultural History of Food in Europe in the series From Marathon to Maastricht - Europe Makes History .
