Matamba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kingdom of Matamba was a pre-colonial African state on the river Kwango in today's region Baixa de Cassanje in the province of Malanje in Angola . The powerful kingdom long resisted Portuguese colonization attempts. It was not incorporated into Angola until the end of the 19th century. There were especially female rulers. The most important ruler was Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba .

history

The Matamba Kingdom was founded before the 16th century and was dominated by the Congo Empire until around 1550 . A war against the Portuguese was waged under Queen Nzinga, which ended in 1656. After her death in 1666, a civil war ensued, won by the descendants of Nzinga's general João Guterres Ngola Kanini. Short-term border disputes followed with the neighboring kingdom of Kazanje over areas on the Kwango, until Queen Verónica Guterres Ngola Kanini clearly defined the borders. In the period that followed, relations with Portugal were mostly peaceful, although there were also brief phases of war. In 1744 the Portuguese defeated an army of the kingdom, which thus became a quasi vassal state of Portugal and was briefly divided into two parts in 1767. Since the 1830s, Matamba came again increasingly into the focus of the Portuguese, who wanted to conquer areas for their coffee plantations , but could not stop the Portuguese expansion in the 1890s and were therefore soon integrated into their empire.
