The material Verlag (also material-Verlag HFBK ) is an author for artistic Verlag book projects at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg .

history

The material publishing house was founded in 1972. Before that, too, there were already publishing activities at the Hamburg Art School on Lerchenfeld.

However, it was almost exclusively works by university teachers that contained the various publications. In the early days of what was then the State School of Applied Arts, there was still no question of a largely independent artistic publication practice by students as an integral part of teaching, which is the primary goal of publishing activities today.

To date, the publishing house has more than 370 publications by students and teachers, which are presented in a chronology. Almost all titles can be viewed in the HFBK library (including the works awarded by the Book Art Foundation in the “The Most Beautiful German Books” competition or awarded the prize for young book designers). In 2003, Materialverlag received the Hamburg Culture Authority's sponsorship award.

program

The focus of the work in the material publishing house is on artist books where the author and designer are identical. In addition to individual artistic objects of various shapes, there are sometimes editions that reveal the interests and fields of work of an art college.
