Heinrich Wilhelm Ferdinand Sannow , von Sannow since 1871 , (born June 7, 1827 in Magdeburg , † December 10, 1883 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian major general .

He was the son of Hans Friedrich Wilhelm Sannow (1773–1848) and his wife Christine Friederke, née Bauer, widowed von Woldeck (1786–1877). His father was a lieutenant colonel . D. , last in the 3rd Artillery Brigade .

Military career

Sannow attended the cadet schools in Potsdam and Berlin . On May 27, 1845 he was employed as a porter ensign in the 9th Infantry Regiment (called Colbergsches) of the Prussian Army . There he was promoted to Second Lieutenant on February 24, 1846 and was in command of the 2nd Combined Reserve Battalion from April 1, 1848 to March 31, 1849. This was followed by assignments as a battalion and regimental adjutant. As Prime Lieutenant Sannow was deputy adjutant at the General Command of the II Army Corps from May to mid-August 1857 . On February 9, 1858 he was appointed adjutant of the 27th Infantry Brigade and promoted in this capacity to captain on May 31, 1859 . As such, Sannow returned to his main regiment on May 8, 1860, and was appointed company commander there on November 13, 1860 . On July 5, 1862, he was transferred to the Magdeburg Fusilier Regiment No. 36 . With this association Sannow took part in the battle near Örlenbach in 1866 during the German War and was wounded near Roßbrunn . For his achievements he received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords.

As a major , Sannow was appointed commander of the Fusilier Battalion in the 3rd Westphalian Infantry Regiment No. 16 in Hanover on August 10, 1868 . After mobilization on the occasion of the war against France , he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on July 26, 1870. During the Battle of Vionville , the regimental commander, Colonel Hans von Brixen, fell and Sannow was then put in charge of the regiment. In the further course of the campaign he fought at Gravelotte and took part in the siege of Metz . In the battle of Beaune-la-Rolande , Sannow managed to hold the city against outnumbered French forces. At the suggestion of his commanding general von Voigts-Rhetz , Sannow was awarded the order Pour le Mérite .

Kaiser Wilhelm I got Sannow because bewiesender gallantry against the enemy during his solemn entry into Berlin on 16 June 1871 in the hereditary Prussian nobility . Even after the peace agreement , he was still entrusted with the management of the regiment. On March 16, 1872 Sannow was finally appointed regimental commander and on March 22, 1873 promoted to colonel . He then acted from March 13, 1875 to January 17, 1878 as commander of the Guard Fusilier Regiment . Then Sannow was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 43rd Infantry Brigade in Kassel . He gave up this command on January 13, 1879 and became commander of the 49th Infantry Brigade (1st Grand Ducal Hessian) in Darmstadt . Due to an eye problem, Sannow had to arrange his departure . With the award of the star to the Crown Order II class, he was put up for disposal on June 12, 1880 with the statutory pension .
