Mathes Klayndl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mathes Klayndl (* between 1430 and 1440 in Freistadt , Upper Austria; † around 1509) was an Austrian master stonemason of the late Gothic period .

Life

It is believed that Mathes Klayndl was born between 1430 and 1440. The exact details are not known, as he did not appear until 1483 as foreman for the city of Freistadt in Riedmark , Austria above the Enns . Based on the life stories of other medieval master stonemasons, a birth in the aforementioned period can be assumed: Like other master stonemasons, Mathes started his apprenticeship at the age of around 14 and had to learn to be a bricklayer for 3 years. He learned to be a master stonemason for 2 more years before going on a hike . In order to become a master, the planning and construction of a building was required, which means that stonemasons only became masters when they were around 25, as was probably the case with Mathes.

His brother Stefan was also a master stonemason and was called to Chur (Graubünden, Switzerland) around 1464 .

Before Mathes came to Freistadt, he was already building plants in the vicinity of the city. From 1483 work was carried out on the Freistadt city fortifications in order to better protect them against the dangers of the time, and he came to the city for around 20 years. After 1500 Mathes worked again in the vicinity of Freistadt, he was no longer involved in the construction of the city after the city fire of 1507.

As little is known about his death as about his birth. Hence, it is believed that he died around 1509.

Mathes Klayndl is considered to be an important Austrian architect of the late Gothic period.

Buildings

Of these structures, only two fortifications and the choir of the parish church of Freistadt are documented. Due to the construction method and the same stonemason's marks , the other buildings are also attributed to him.
