Mathews Mar Barnabas

Mathews Mar Barnabas (born August 9, 1924 in Vengola, † December 9, 2012 in Thiruvalla ) was an Indian metropolitan of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church .

Life

He first studied biology at Madras Christian College and botany at Osmania University , then theology. In 1949 he entered the Orthodox seminary and learned the Syrian language . He was vicar in Calcutta and studied at Bishop's College Calcutta and Serampore University .

His Holiness Baselios Geevarghese II consecrated him in 1943 in Thuruthipaly, Vengola, as a deacon. He has taught at Kurppumpady MGM High School and D Seminary High School Kottayam . Metropolitan Augen Mar Thimotheos, who later became Baselios Augen I. , ordained him as a priest in 1951. He was a lecturer at the Orthodox Theological Seminary at Kottayam from 1967 to 1972 and chaplain at the Kolenchery Medical Mission Hospital from 1972 to 1978.

On May 15, 1978, he received episcopal ordination from His Holiness Baselios Mar Thoma Mathews I. He was appointed Bishop of Ankamali and Kottayam. In 1982 he was the first metropolitan of Idukki and from 1992 metropolitan for North America. The head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church (Indian Orthodox Church) Baselios Marthoma Paulose II accepted his resignation in 2011.
