Abune Mathias (* 1941/42 in Sebuha, Agame District, Tigray (Northern Ethiopia ) as Teklemariam Asrat ) has been the patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church since 2013 . His full title is His Holiness Abune Mathias, Sixth Patriarch and Catholicos of Ethiopia, Echege of the See of St. Takla Haymanot and Archbishop of Axum .
Life
Teklemariam, born according to the Ethiopian calendar in 1934, was ordained a deacon by Abune Markos in 1954 and a priest in 1963. He was appointed the new Ethiopian Orthodox Bishop of Jerusalem, taking the episcopal name Abune Mathias. After 1992 he became Archbishop of North America and later Archbishop of the United States.
