Mathias Hofter

Mathias René Hofter (born July 23, 1953 ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Mathias Hofter studied classical archeology, philosophy and art history at the University of Bonn and the University of Heidelberg , and he also spent a study visit to Rome . In 1984 he received his doctorate in Bonn with a thesis on the subject of investigations into the style and chronology of central Italian terracotta votive heads and then traveled to parts of the Mediterranean region as the holder of a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) . In 1988 he organized the exhibition Emperor Augustus and the Lost Republic at the Antikensammlung Berlin in West Berlin . Hofter then worked on the critical edition of Johann Joachim Winckelmann's History of Ancient Art , where he was responsible for the archaeological commentary. In this context, the habilitation thesis Ideal und Anschauung was created. On the genesis of JJ Winckelmann's archaeological method , which was adopted in June 2001. Since then he has been a private lecturer at the Free University of Berlin . In 1999 Hofter and Stefan Altekamp and Michael Krumme organized the Colloquium Posthumanist Classical Archeology - Historicity and Scientific Quality of Interests and Methods in Berlin. He also writes for the Berliner Zeitung and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and works as a translator of archaeological books.
