Mathieu Lewin

Mathieu Lewin (born November 14, 1977 in Senlis , Département Oise) is a French mathematician and mathematical physicist who deals with partial differential equations, mathematical quantum field theory and mathematics of quantum mechanical many-body systems.

Lewin studied mathematics at the École normal supérieure de Cachan . He obtained his DEA degree in 2000 and received his PhD ( Some nonlinear models in quantum mechanics ) from the University of Paris IX ( Dauphine-Paris ) in 2004 under the direction of Éric Séré . From 2004 to 2005 he was a post-doctoral student at the University of Copenhagen with Jan Philip Solovej . From 2005 he did research for the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) at the University of Cergy-Pontoise near Paris.

In 2012 he received the EMS award . In the laudation, his fundamental work in the strict mathematical treatment of quantum mechanical many-body theory, quantum chemistry and relativistic quantum field theory and the associated mean-field approximations were highlighted.

For example, together with Enno Lenzmann, he proved the existence of minimizers for the Bogoljubow- Hartree-Fock equations of gravitationally interacting relativistic neutron matter in neutron stars and white dwarfs.
