The United States Geological Survey mapped them on the basis of the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1959 to 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1970 after the engineer Terry R. Mathis, who lived on the Byrd between 1967 and 1968. Station was active.
