Matomo , formerly Piwik , is a widely used open source - web analytics platform. Piwik replaced phpMyVisites in 2007 and competes with Google Analytics .
The Matomo web application can be operated in the provider's cloud and on its own server. When storing log data that is sensitive under data protection law , the variant with its own server can guarantee more user privacy , as the data is not automatically shared with third parties. Due to the self-hosting option and the customization options, Matomo is also often used to bypass user-side ad and tracking blockers. In Germany, Matomo is the most widely used web analytics tool after Google Analytics. Matomo has a market share of around 14.6 percent in Germany. The open source tool enables precise analyzes of overall performance and user behavior. Each customer journey is recorded 1: 1, so that the movement data of each visitor can be viewed down to the individual level. Individual customer tracking can also be implemented, with which every interaction of a visitor can be traced. While Google Analytics is limited to a maximum of ten million actions per month, Matomo uses all data for the evaluation. In addition, there are no storage limits, because Matomo does not limit the number of websites per account.
history
Since version 0.1 was released on March 6, 2008, Piwik has been downloaded a good 3.4 million times (as of January 2018). Matomo is used by numerous large sites such as bund.de or SourceForge . Piwik was the official web statistics software for projects on SourceForge until the end of 2012.
With the release of Piwik version 2.16.0 at the beginning of February 2016, Matomo is also available with long-term support . Corresponding versions are only maintained with regard to critical software errors, primarily with regard to software security, and do not receive any new functions.
On January 9, 2018, Piwik changed its name to Matomo. No further changes should be made. The first version that was released under the new name is version 3.3.0. On February 17, 2020, Matomo released a WordPress plugin called Matomo Analytics, which enables WordPress users to host the open source analysis platform directly in the WordPress installation.
Functions
The range of functions includes:
- Statistics on page views on day periods accumulated and as Echtzeitlog
- Unique visits with third party cookies
- Visitor analysis (countries of origin, browser, operating system)
- Referrer analysis
- Goal definition
- Multi-tenancy for multiple websites
- Campaign and target tracking for ecommerce
- Anonymization of the IP address for data protection (optional)
- Clients for Android and iOS
In addition, the storage of old logs can be regulated manually via the menu item Databases; this allows you to specify how long Matomo should save data. An opt-out function is also offered, which enables the user to deactivate tracking.
technology
Matomo is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database. The visitor counting is done with JavaScript or web beacons , an API , or a log file analysis .
On the server side, the libraries Zend Framework , PEAR and Twig are used as template engine (before version 2.0 Smarty ), on the client side jQuery and jqPlot are used.
The log data is stored non-relational and regularly at major instances via cron , at day periods aggregated and by "staging" integrated . These archive data are stored in individual tables for each month.
The graphical user interface (GUI) is web-based, from version 1.5 graphs are displayed with canvas elements . All indicators can also use a REST - API to query. In addition, all data in CSV , XML and JSON formats can be queried via a REST API and the software can be controlled.
With version 1.8.2 numerous revisions have been made, for example in the representation of the graphical data analysis. At the same time new features were added, such as the possibility of importing and evaluating of web server log files, creating custom code overviews ( English dashboards ) and displaying advanced reports.
To install Matomo on the server, the following requirements must be met:
- PHP version 5.5.9 or newer
- Web server (Apache, nginx or IIS)
- MySQL version 5.5 and newer or MariaDB 10
- necessary PHP extensions (pdo and pdo_mysql)
Surname
Piwik is an internationally registered word mark by Matthieu Aubry.
Matomo was also registered as an international word mark by Matthieu Aubry. The objection period for the new word mark ended on March 10, 2018. The reason for the renaming is the delimitation of companies that used the name Piwik in their name and used it commercially.
