Matope

Matope is an archaeological site on a tributary of the Gorongosa north of the Save in the Sofala province , Machanga district in Mozambique . The finds of house remains, bones of domestic animals, millstones, glass beads and cowries are assigned to the Iron Age Nkope culture 300 to 1000 and the Munhumutapa empire . There is currently no report posted online.

The archaeological site of Matope is not identical to the present day Matope in the provinces of Zambesia (coordinate: 17 ° 14 '57 "S, 37 ° 34' 19" E), Niassa (coordinate: 11 ° 40 'S, 38 ° 06' E) or Manica (coordinates: 20 ° 22 '47 S, 33 ° 21' 28 E).

Matope is a Suahili word and means mud.
