Matronae Ahinehiae
The Ahinehiae are matrons that are only passed down through an inscription from Blankenheim , district of Euskirchen , which is now lost .
"Matronis / Ahinehiabus / Atticianus / [S] peratus / l (ibens) m (erito)"
The inscription is read differently, especially when it comes to the matron's name. Clauss-Slaby read in the series by Géza Alföldy , who followed the reading by Alexander von Wiltheim : Atrenivabus , or modified as Atirienivabus . Gutenbrunner notes that this reading (which Max Ihm rejects) would still be linked to related documents without comparison. The common reading Ahine (h) iae comes from him .
The Germanic name is possible from the tribe * aχa to Old High German aha = "water, river" as a continuation of Germanic * aχwō = "water" to the Indo-European word * h 2 ák w ah 2 = "water". The root of the word is also in the matron s name of the Matronae Almaviahenae , to which the New High German documents Ache and Aue correspond. The name is topical in nature and suggests the Ahinehiae as presumable protectors of a waterhole or generally as river or water deities. They also belong to a group of matrons that are interpreted as river and water deities, such as the Ahveccaniae , Fernovineae , Nersihenae , Udravarinehae and Vacallinehae .
