Matthew Brian "Matt" Thompson (born August 18, 1982 in Bankstown , New South Wales ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Thompson began his active career as a football player at Campbelltown RSL In 1999 he moved to the New South Wales Super League for the Macarthur Rams playing there . In the same season he transferred to the then top division in Australian football, the National Soccer League , to Parramatta Power . At the Parramatta football club he played 93 games before he left in 2004, scoring eight goals. In 2004 he returned to his former club, the Macarthur Rams, after the league was closed, where he played 13 games and scored three goals. He then played in the New South Wales Premier League with the Marconi Stallions . When the A-League was founded in August 2005 , Thompson transferred to the Newcastle United Jets . In the 2007/08 season , Thompson and his team were Australian champions. In 2010 he left Newcastle and moved to the newly founded league competitor Melbourne Heart , with whom he received no new contract in 2013. In October 2013 he joined Sydney FC , which provided him with a contract until the summer of 2014.

In early 2009, he played for the first time in the Australian national team as part of the qualification for the 2011 Asian Cup .

With 311 games, he holds the record for most appearances in the A-League.
