The Matthews Island is an island in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It is the northernmost and largest in the group of Robertson Islands and lies immediately southeast of Coronation Island , from which it is separated by the narrow strait The Divide .
Until it was measured by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in January 1957, it was considered part of Coronation Island. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1959 after Drummond Hoyle Matthews (1931–1997), who was a geologist for the survey on Signy Island in 1956.
