The Divide ( English for The Gap or The watershed is) a narrow channel in the archipelago of the South Orkney Islands . It runs between Matthews Island and the southeastern extension of Coronation Island and connects Whale Bay in the west with Lewthwaite Strait in the east.
The Norwegian whaling captain Petter Sørlle mapped it as an isthmus between 1912 and 1913 . The same happened to participants in the British Discovery Investigations in 1933. They were also used for the descriptive naming. The true nature of this geographic object was revealed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey after surveying in 1957.
