Matthias Droste (born October 24, 1792 in Ramsbeck , † November 17, 1864 in Grafschaft ) was a German priest .

Life

Matthias Droste was born on October 24, 1792 in Ramsbeck . On August 4, 1818, Droste was ordained a priest in Corvey by the last Prince Abbot Ferdinand von Lüninck . August 10, 1818 to 1825, he was vicar in Siedlinghausen . From March 10, 1825 until his death, Droste was pastor in the county . He was the first secular priest in this parish. From June 1842, Pastor Droste was first dean , later dean , of the dean's office in Wormbach . After almost 40 years as a priest, he died on November 17, 1864 in Grafschaft.

1804 Kloster Grafschaft was abolished. The parish of Grafschaft, which has 600 souls, was unable to take over the abbey church for financial reasons. In 1828 the baron Max von Fürstenberg (Westphalian noble family) zu Borbeck acquired the monastery property including the church and buildings. Since the abbey was closed, no more investments have been made in maintaining the abbey church. Negotiations about the further use of the abbey church began again. Pastor Droste was aware of his historical responsibility. He tried to keep the abbey church. He wrote: "In my opinion, discussions must take place in this regard so that posterity can see from the negotiations that we have done everything possible on our part to preserve this Church." The negotiations were unsuccessful. In 1832 Baron von Fürstenberg had the church demolished. The Mescheder Kreisblatt, No. 47, of November 19, 1864, acquitted Pastor Droste, who died in that year, of guilt for the decline of the church: “About the preservation of the magnificent temple ... it would have been time to talk about the abolition of the abbey what has unfortunately been forgotten. When Droste came ... the angel from Bethesda had disappeared. "

Pastor Droste has become an object of legend among the people. He was known in the Sauerland because of the uncanny gift of the second face. According to the testimony of his nephew, the general practitioner K. Droste, who died in Arnsberg in 1902, he often foresaw the death of his parishioners and in the words of the complaint he probably revealed to the people around him that he was helplessly afraid of the terrible gift.
